Travel tips

From Scotland Wiki

Always book your travel in advance. Check travel news, especially in winter as travel is often disrupted. Carry spare petrol/gas/diesel when travelling in the Highlands and make sure you know where the next filling stations are. Not all of the country has good mobile/cell phone signals. Carry blankets in winter as even the trains can get cold. Don't leave your car if you get stuck in snow. The locals are generally very friendly, but their accents can sometimes be difficult to follow. Don't travel if the radio (BBC Radio Scotland) advises against it.

Be patient on the roads - you may have to follow a slow-moving truck for miles and miles. Stop regularly. Carry loose change as £10 an £20 notes are not always welcome in small shops. Shops are often closed one day of the week; sorry, can't tell you which one as it varies from town to town. Big shops and banks close on English holiday days.

If you are travelling Ryan Air to/from Glasgow Prestwick you get half-price train travel in Scotland that day.

DRIVE ON THE LEFT OF THE ROAD. Very few hire cars have automatic gear changes; ask for automatic gear shifters explicitly.

DON'T CALL THE LOCALS ENGLISH OR SCOTCH, and many don't want to be called British either. The correct term is Scots for the people and Scottish for their artefacts (except whisky and beef which are Scotch.)
